The Light is Gone!

...

“What was that?” Emily asked.
“Someone has stolen our glowing corals, fish, and even the radiant sea grass,” Julian whispered in shock.
“But how could they do that? You can’t just gather all the sea grass at once, and you certainly can’t chase all the glowing fish at the same time,” Marlene thought aloud, smiling at the idea of someone swimming after ten fish at once.
“But how could it be done in the dark?” Charlotte asked. Then Lucy started tapping and murmured, “Well, our secret hiding place is around here. Maybe we’ll find the emergency crystal that we got from Eve, Flo, and Catherine.”
“That’s right!” Ryan exclaimed excitedly, crawling along the seabed. “I think it’s just a little further.” Samantha joined the search too. Finally, all the children crawled, wriggled, and shuffled along the seabed to find their secret box, where they kept all sorts of treasures from the human world—and also an emergency crystal from their caretakers. You could hear tapping, rustling, and shuffling until Kyle joyfully called out: “Here’s the box!”

Everyone carefully swam over and opened the box gently so nothing would fall out. Ava whispered in delight, “Look, the crystal is glowing! Just like Eve, Flo, and Catherine said. It will protect us in times of need!” The crystal then passed from hand to hand, casting a dim light all around them.

Without hesitation, they swam off. Not far away, they indeed found a noticeable trail on the seabed that had not been there the day before, and they followed it. More and more fish joined them, probably finding it strange that everything had suddenly gone dark. However, the sandy seabed became rockier, making the trail harder to see.

Suddenly the trail ended, and they looked around in desperation, finding nothing unusual. Eventually, they heard the faint, sinister laugh again. They followed the sounds, which came intermittently, but after a while, all was silent.

Then Jacob suddenly exclaimed, “I smell ink again! Do you smell it too?” Everyone moved closer, catching the faint scent of the old Inkling, who—yes, you guessed it—was a squid. Excited, they followed the scent as it grew stronger, and they could hear the laughter and singing of someone who seemed very pleased.
