The Light is Gone!
...
Fatima nodded thoughtfully and suggested, “Maybe you can take the light from our crystal. Would that be enough?”
Inkling considered it, then glanced at the crystal and said lightly, “Well, it’s worth a try.” He pulled a paper from his pocket and murmured:
“Akros, Prokos, darkus, Lurkus, light go into the chest. Light of the crystal go into the cave. Akros, Prokos, darkus, Lurkus!”
All the lights floated into the chest, and the crystal’s light spread throughout the cave. Some light stayed behind so the crystal wouldn’t lose its magic.
The children smiled happily—they didn’t want the crystal to lose its power. Inkling swam around the cave, inspecting everything carefully. Finally, he said, “This is almost better. Honestly, your light was far too bright for me. Shall we return your light?” The children nodded.
“Then come,” he said, carrying the treasure chest and leading them down another passage. There, a giant whale waited, winking at them. It quickly approached and was harnessed to a giant shell carriage, which had clearly made the marks on the sand.
They sped back to Clearwater in the shell carriage. The city was still dark.
They heard the voices of their parents, friends, and their dear caretakers Eve, Flo, and Catherine. They had discovered the children were missing and called for them. Everyone was so glad when the children finally answered.
Then Inkling said, “Akros, Prokos, darkus, Lurkus, light go back to your place. Akros, Prokos, darkus, Lurkus.”
The treasure chest opened, and all the lights floated back to their places. Clearwater shone again, and the merpeople were extremely happy to have their light back.
Everyone celebrated together, even scolding Inkling a little—but nobody stayed mad for long. Everyone danced around the lights, especially Ava, Charlotte, Emily, Fatima, Fran, Jacob, Julian, Kyle, Luke, Lucy, Mary, Marlene, Noah, Ryan, Remy, and Samantha, and were now even more grateful for their beautiful Clearwater.
