The Light is Gone! (Part 3)

...

Suddenly, stones jutted out, revealing a passage into the earth. A thin beam of light shone from it. They entered and found themselves among many shelves filled with all sorts of things: bottles, cans, boxes, and stone tablets, which served as a way to record and preserve knowledge under the sea—sort of a substitute for books, which don’t work underwater.

Cautiously, they approached and now heard the old Inkling clearly singing:
“Oh, how beautiful! Oh, how beautiful is the light. Just for me alone. Oh, how beautiful is the light!”
 Pretty strange, right?

At that moment, one of the fish bumped into a shell on a shelf, and a pearl rolled out, hitting a bottle of red liquid that tipped over and fell to the ground. The red liquid spread toward the old Inkling.

They were about to retreat, but it was too late. Inkling spotted the liquid and swam excitedly toward them. “What are you doing here?” he demanded. Startled, everyone looked at him. Fran shouted bravely, “We want our light back!”

Ashamed, Inkling looked at them and stammered, “I-I’m sorry. But it’s so beautiful. And otherwise—I never have light in my cave.”
“But how did you do it?” Luke asked.

Excitedly, Inkling continued, now more confidently, “A few days ago, I found a treasure on the seabed. Inside was some trinkets and a spell that can capture light in a treasure chest. I wanted to try it out and… I got your light. My cave is never lit otherwise, and I always bump my head.”

The children were stunned. How could the old Inkling take their precious light, even if he needed it?

“That’s not fair,” Mary said angrily. “You’re right,” Inkling admitted.
“But I don’t want to sit in the dark anymore,” he added, crossing his arms and looking at them challengingly.
